I just helped 2 friends put together new computers over Christmas, and I recommended both buy a ATI Radeon 9000 PRO because they needed good 2D and good DVD hardware support (and the occasional games). Both friends find it runs great on their Pentium 4s.
The 9000 has been on sale at Future Shop for $149 Cdn. It is an EXCELLENT deal. Don't bother getting a non-ATI Radeon, as the quality varies.
Also, the 9000's are true DirectX 8 cards, whereas the GeForce 4 MX 440, 460 etc. are actually GeForce 2-level DirectX 7 cards. (You'll have to get a GF 4 Ti 4200 to get DX8 features.
If you want a nVidia card in your price range, I'd recommend any GeForce 3.
See this thread for more of my comments ATI vs GF. http://forums.3dretreat.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4061
Also, check this chart for speed comparisons: http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/20030120/vgacharts-05.html |

What's the relevance of this? I don't see why you posted this. |
