What do the best 1st/3rd person shooters have in common? What attributes do you think makes a shooting game really good? Which games do you think set the standard?

Personally, I like shooters with a solid story integrated into the game and meaningful objectives. E.g. Half-Life or Splinter Cell.

Yeah, those are both great - although, Splinter Cell definitely has HL beat in the graphics department. It looks like HL2 will pick up the slack of HL graphics-wise. Halo is such an amazing shooter, but I can't quite put my finger on what makes it so much better than most... Obviously, the graphics are awesome. The levels are designed well, the story is good, etc. I think maybe the biggest part of it is the fact that the A.I. is so advanced and believeable that it makes the overall experience much more engaging. More developers should learn from Halo how to create the best A.I. Hopefully we'll be seeing a lot more of that sort of A.I. in future shooters. Already, games like Kill Switch are promising better A.I. and new offensive methods, like blind fire, etc. (http://www.killswitch.com/). But doesn't that make sense? Do you agree with my theory about A.I. making or breaking a shooting game?

I definitely agree good AI is very important in making a good game, otherwise hunting/avoiding enemies will get boring pretty fast. However, remember some of the golden oldies of video games had simple AI but were still fun.

Yeah, but even those ghosts in Pac-Man had more sophisticated A.I. then what you see in some modern games! But other games are quite remarkable now too. I love a game with great graphics, great sound, great A.I., great story... and there are plenty of those now that make those classic games seem like a waste of time to me. Just thinking about it makes me want to rush home and play my games right now!!

What is AI? I never play against them. I like to buy games for their Multiplayer capabilities. Most of you will think im crazy by saying this, but i havent played past misson 4 in the Ghost Recon. I never played the Ds or IT missions, at all.

What makes a good first person shooter to me is the ease of use for the character. And some will say "bah", but I see it as allowing the community to grow. If you've ever noticed, the games (FPS) that have more complex characters, usually don't have a good following. I like playing against others, so thats where my demands lie.

Same here. After I got a nice, fast cable connection, there really isn't a reason for me to play the missions. Sure, if there was a good plot and story behind it I would, but the dynamics and mods you encounter online makes the game go in places that you can't even come close to in single player mode.

And frankly, either A) the AI is unrealisticly too hard or B) So easy that a monkey pounding on the keyboard could beat the game... so I go for the better type of AI.... Actual Intelligence.
