I want to set up raid 0 on an older computer. Here are the specs:
p3 866, 815ep intel chip, 2 WD 'caviar' 80gig hdd's (brand new), 300 watt power supply, geforce 4/mx440, winxp pro, mb supports ata 100.
This computer is used mainly for image editing with photoshop7 and I don't know anything about raid 'cept I don't want to mirror the drives. I'd appreciate it immensely if someone could tell me what pci board to buy, can I use ata133 as opposed to ata100 and any other relevent info.

Yo Stevo, I just helped a friend set up a RAID 0 for video editing. It rocks! (RAID 0 is now standard with many of the new i865PE P4 HT mobos.)

Intel P3 mobos only support ATA/100 natively. Also, until recently, Maxtor was the only hard drive company that makes ATA/133 HDs, but Western Digital just launched their ATA/133 line. Make sure you check the packaging to see if yours is ATA/100 or 133, and if you have 2MB or 8MB cache.

You usually need to purchase a RAID 0 controller that supports ATA/133. Do a search on Google for reviews. Here's one I found at an Australian site:
http://www.overclockers.com.au/techstuff/a_raid0_ata133/

Tom's explains Windows 2000 does not require a hardware RAID controller to setup RAID 0. You can do this just with software:
http://www6.tomshardware.com/howto/20010906/raid-09.html

The main thing you have to know with RAID 0 striping (as opposed to mirroring) is if one HDD fails, all your data is toast.

Good luck!

One other point: A lot of people don't realize you need to have special IDE cables to take advantage of ATA/100 or 133 transfer rates. They ones I own have yellow connectors. If yours are black (ATA/33) or blue (ATA/66) you may not be running optimally.

Also, use a free HDD benchmark like SiSoft Sandra to check your transfer rates.
