Hey darkwolf. The problem is your computer will be limited by your P3 550 CPU. Anything faster than any of the GF 4 MX series will likely won't run any faster unless you upgrade your CPU too.
Note that Geforce 4 MX's are DirectX 7 cards. The GeForce 4200 is a good DX8 card. The ATI Radeon 9000 is a good DX8 card, slower than the GF4200, but cheaper. A Radeon 9500 is an excellent DX9 card for its price, but again you won't likely see it running at full power unless you have a current Pentium 4. |

Limted to $180 aint gonna get you a high performance vid card.
Think about it. The vid card is prolly the most expensive componet in your system.
Spend a little money and get a better video card that will last, and suit your needs. Video card technology is on the rise, so it will be hard to stay constantly on top of the game unless you get the cards for free, or are a rich hoe!

Well price aint everything.
What type of games do you play, and how perfect looking of textures do you want?
Do you prefer aATi, or NVIDIA chipset?
How much *can* you spend up to, and whats the limit to pay? |

Ok, so an ATi card it is....
Good for two reasons, bit cheaper, and in my experience the A
Ti textures are far superior than NVIDIA’s. I have not been able to review, or even really see any of the newer cards so hopefully ATi is still better with textures, and 3d graphics.
Do you know of any, or have you visited any local OEM stores in your area? If you don't then I would try and find some in your area because they can usually be a tad bit cheaper than online. Plus you don't have to wait a few days to get your product. In most cases I would rather buy from a local place than having the risk of my hardware broken, or just not functional. In any case .. .
I would go with the 'RADEON 8500DV 64MB' for around $170-$190 or the 'Radeon 9500 Pro 128MB'for around $180-$190+.
I would also read a few reviews about a few of the ATi cards so you can familiarize yourself with them. |
