Here's a giant news item for PC enthusiasts. Long in the works (and in the rumor mills), this morning AMD officially announced its plans to purchase ATI. The full press release by AMD can be found here, and commentary can be found on virtually every technology and gaming enthusiast site.
This has the potential to shake things up quite a bit. Ever since the introduction of the nForce and nForce 2 platforms, nVidia has been the dominating player for AMD chipsets. With ATI entering the motherboard more recently, it has finally started to see some real success with both the AMD and Intel processor camps, but becoming one with AMD raises questions about what's to come. Will nVidia continue to drive for the AMD market now that the processor company is part ATI? Will there still be ATI chipsets for Intel platforms now that the company is part AMD? And what does this mean for ATI graphics industry or running SLI on an AMD board? Come share your questions on our forums.
Update:The Tech Report has talk of "AMD Platformization" here and a good list of additional merger notes including what the two companies expect will happen in the future. Check it out. |

Heh. Well you can't get by in this industry without having some sort of official response. :D
TR has a few short answers back from nVidia and Intel about the merger.
Intel gives the typical "we have no comments at this time" answer... but nVidia does a little better I think :D |

Nice links GB! I like this quote by Nvidia: "On the other hand, our relationship with Intel is going to become much more intimate than before. We are now Intel's best GPU partner."
I would sure like a decent SLI chipset for my Core 2 Duo rig |

And here I thought you were going to be excited that AMD/ATI "remains fully committed to Canada"
You green team traitor! :D |

Well, I've already done my patriotic duty for ATI over the years. I still have:
Pentium 200MHz w/ Radeon 7200 Pentium III 700MHz w/ Radeon 7500 P4 2.5GHz w/ Radeon 9800 Pro P4 3.4GHz w/ Radeon X800XT PE Xbox 360 w/ Radeon Xenos (X1K level GPU)
However, I am also currently running a P4 2.4GHz w/ GeForce 6800GT (upgraded from a GF 5700) and used to have a GF3/GF2 MX/TNT2/TNT/Riva 128 (now all given to friends/charities) so I've got a good idea about how Nvidia has been doing over the years too, and in the last couple years ATI has had trouble executing and eating some of NV's dust.
Seriously though, I doubt I'd really get an SLI rig ... too many bugs to sort out. I'll probably stay a single card GPU user myself. I will be getting a Core 2 rig someday next 1-2 years ... hopefully when they increase the FSB to dual channel DDR2 800.
However, I'm in no rush to upgrade now as there are no games out there that I'm compelled to upgrade for ... |
