The August '04 issue of Game Informer has a massive 10-page cover story on SC3: Chaos Theory. There's a ton of info and brand-new screenshots in there.

New tidbits of info include:
  • Ubisoft Montreal basically rebuilt the Splinter Cell game from scratch with a brand-new engine. Apparently, SC2: Pandora Tomorrow attempted to "max-out" what the original SC1 engine could do. So for SC3, Ubi is restarting with a new engine to take the franchise to the next level.
  • One of the strengths of the new engine is how it portrays weather effects, especially rain. E.g. Sam will appear to get progressively more wet in the rain. Rain also affects the AI and gameplay, as enemies will run for shelter during storms.
  • There's more info on the new "sound meter" and how Sam can use noise to conceal his movements. E.g. In a daylight level, Sam may only move around undetected when there are intermittent noises like sirens, etc.
  • Story elements introduced in SC2 will play major roles in the SC3 storyline, like the Douglas Shetland character and Japan's newly formed Intelligence Defence Force.
  • Settings for SC3 will include Hokkaido, Japan, North Korea, and New York.
