That's because Ubisoft appears to be committed to churn out a new Splinter Cell title approximately once a year. The original SC1 came out in late 2002, and SC2 in early 2004. If SC3 comes out this year, that's 2 SC titles in 2004!

Here's some insight into how Ubi plans to crank out a new SC game every year:

Balancing Development
Since the studios that worked on Pandora Tomorrow were different from Ferland's group that made the original (and is working on Chaos Theory), we wanted to know if that was done to give the Chaos Theory team more time to work on their game, but according to Ferland, that's not the main reason for the split development. "We wanted to train a larger team because we got tons of ideas around this concept," he says. "And we wanted to have larger skills within our internal studio -- to get very good people, very talented people to produce two titles at once if it requires it. If at one time our production development [time] rose to, I don't know, three years, then we're still going to be able to ship games regularly. It's a very big trend of our company right now." Could that mean Splinter Cell 4 will be handled by the studios that worked on Pandora Tomorrow? "It's not planned exactly this way right now, but we've been doing the first, they've been doing the second, we've been doing the third -- well maybe we will be doing the next one or they will be doing the next one..."
