Today is a landmark day for PC enthusiasts as 64-bit computing officially comes home to the desktop system. Although 64-bit systems (e.g. Itanium & Opteron) have been available for some time in servers and workstations, AMD launched the Athlon 64 FX today aimed at the home desktop. Intel hasn't been sitting still however, and has countered AMD's launch at the last minute by announcing their new "Pentium 4 Extreme Edition" with 2MB of L3 cache.
Two hardware sites have used their own custom Ghost Recon benchmarks to compare these two top-of-the-line CPUs. Check out benchmarks at these links to Ace's Hardware and SimHQ. Here's a snippet from SimHQ:While looking over the scores, pay particular attention to the "bullet" scores, as these are the numbers that are run from the CPU alone. The detail on the games is essentially turned off and the CPU draws as many frames as possible without the help of the video card. You can see that AMD holds a tremendous advantage in most games here when the scores are isolated on the CPU. Look at Ghost Recon and you can see that AMD holds a 33% advantage over the 3.2GHz P4. That is tremendous! |
