No, it's unfortunately not the title for Ghost Recon 2 :-( Ubi Soft announced today that Jungle Storm is a new and exclusive GR title for the PlayStation 2. For those of you who think that it's just a rehash of Island Thunder from the PC/Xbox, you are only half right. GameSpot reports that Jungle Storm will also feature a second eight-mission single player campaign where the Ghosts go after a Colombian cartel that financed the failed revolution in Cuba.
Here's a summary of what we know so far about Jungle Storm:The title is being developed by Ubi Soft's Paris studio.Unlike the original Ghost Recon PS2 which had no online play, Jungle Storm will use the PS2 Network Adapter and Voice Communicator (used by Sony's SOCOM: US Navy SEALs) for online play and voice chat.Set in 2009, Jungle Storm will have the same eight-mission Cuban campaign as Island Thunder, but the story continues as a Columbian drug cartel takes revenge by bombing an American embassy, which leads the Ghosts to Columbia. There will be 31 multiplayer maps and 10 multiplayer gameplay modes.Online statistics tracking and ladder rankings will be supported. The game is due at the end of 2003.
Check out lots of Jungle Storm screenshots over here at GameSpy. |

Here's hoping that the Columbian levels will show up on the PC ... I guess time will tell.
It won't be the first time that the console version of a Tom Clancy game has "extra missions" ... the PlayStation version of R6 had 2 "new and exclusive" missions, and they weren't anything to write home about. However, I heard Ubi Shanghai did a good job creating the exclusive "snow" mission for Splinter Cell PS2 ... which I also doubt will ever be seen on the PC :-( Ref: http://forums.3dretreat.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4718
I don't know how many PC players realize this, but I think Ubi is really trying hard to make GR a success on the PlayStation 2 because: 1) the PS2 has the lion's share of the high-end console market right now (wayyy more than the Xbox); 2) There is wayyy more money for Ubi to make in the console market than for the PC. So it makes sense for Ubi to focus more resources on the PS2.
SOCOM was a HUGE hit on the PS2, and Ubi has a chance to compete with that title head-on with GR. However, Ubi Soft Paris had better be working hard to make Jungle Storm a major improvement over the original GR for PS2, which was roundly panned by the critics for poor graphics and gameplay. http://forums.3dretreat.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4223

| I'm completely aware of the "marketing" reasonings behind console games and PC. I'm just one of those guys that outgrew them and probably won't ever go back. |

Hehe, actually, my reply was more in response to what people are saying in a few threads at the GR.com and GR.net sites. GR.net has a good discussion about Jungle Storm here. |
