Well I'm back in school once again... This time is my last term and I'll be all done with an Associate in Computer Science. This brings me to my topic which I will briefly explain. .
For my graduation project I’m going to be developing a Wireless Intrusion Detection System for Linux. The nature of “WIDS”(my project) is to develop an integrated application for intrusion detection on IEEE 802.11a & 802.11b networks. This application will not only be used in a wireless environment but be mobile. WIDS will not only function on a local box, but it will operate for every node on the wireless network. This project will not only be for a graduation project, but be used by myself and others in a group known as “The Janus Project”
So with this under my belt, I’ve been doing a ton of reading on Linux, Shell programming, and just Wi Fi stuff in general. I have lots to learn, but hopefully in the next month or so I’ll have something to show you all.

| How do you plan to make it mobile? Or will you just have it monitor wireless APs throughout the network? Just curious, I use wireless sniffers and their portable product can either be run on a laptop with a wireless card or an iPaq with a wireless card eventhough sniffing isnt the same as IDS, but its pretty close. |

Going to design it with a the VIA Edan board, thus it will be small enough so I wil be able to mount it in the car.
I Would like to get a LCD for it (I might get one) but I don't know if I will be able to. If not then I'll have to make some adapter so it will be able to run video out of the unit and into something else.. Not really thought about this yet.
Sniffing is "almost" the same as an IDS, but an IDS is a tad more complex. With IDS I'll be doing a constent scan for all types of requests (i.e Arp). |

| Yea, I know that IDS actually looks at the packet information (content) instead of just raw packets. I was just wondering how you were going to make it portable, are you going to install Linux and your project on a PC and mount it in your car, or possibly a laptop? That would be pretty funny from my perspective to mount the wireless sniffer in my car and drive around town just to see how many wireless networks are out there and how many I can get into without l/p. I know there is one by our airport that one of the contractors is using. |
