Black Thorn was originally supposed to be released yesterday. Ubi Soft's decision to delay Black Thorn as a result of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks has been controversial among R6 fans to say the least. The official BT forums have been flooded with many angry complaints arguing that delaying the game is tantamount to letting the terrorists win.Well, thanks to Pie for pointing out an excellent level-headed and insightful forum post written by a New York police officer (there's no reason not to believe that he is who he says he is) about this issue. I think it's a very worthwhile read for all concerned.
CR6's viewpoint:
To be honest, when I first heard about the delay, I wasn't sure what to think. However, after considering both sides, if I were in Ubi Soft's shoes, I would have made the same decision that they did. Not just for business reasons (Ubi Soft will likely avoid bad publicity which is worth more than the cost of losing a few weeks of sales and some disgruntled fans), but also for compassionate reasons, which is a reason that a lot of unhappy fans seem to forget.
Furthermore, if you are familiar with the process of developing a game, you will know that what may seem like "minor" changes/modifications to a game (that was likely almost done) will take a long time. Imagine if even one of the BT missions is removed from the single player campaign: that will necessitate rethinking and rewriting the script, tracking down the voice actors to re-record spoken text, retooling and retesting the final game code, etc.
Note that Ubi Soft says that BT will be released before the end of this year. Many online retailers are even giving dates at the end of October ... that means not much more than 1 month after the original release date! Many other games have been delayed much longer for much lesser reasons.
In the end, there are much more important things in life than playing computer games. We at RS Retreat encourage all fans to exercise patience as Ubi Soft and the BT team do what they consider necessary.
