Just buy an Xbox for $199 :-) I use it as my primary DVD player in my entertainment system. I also bought a DVD burner last week that is the DVD+R/DVD+RW format. It is the latest recordable DVD format. The first was DVD-R/DVD-RW. The DVD+R/RW formats are much more compatible with DVD players than the first format. DVD+R will pretty much play in anything and DVD+RW is fairly compatible. In doing my research, I was only expecting DVD+R to play in my Xbox but I was plesently surprised to learn that the DVD+RW discs also work!

Actually for the price, that is a really good deal.> Probably one of the better ones you will find. It can also support 5.1 digital sound, and HDTV out 1080i
As for MP3's etc. Not sure. Although I have an APEX dvd player, not sure about the re-writable etc. but, it does the VCD, MP3, digital audio out etc etc. Mine is an older version (over a year and a half old) but I bought it for 140$ and it was a 3 disk changer..
Check them out here.

Oblivion,
Listen you got a computer. just get a DVD ROM and a TV out card, you sound card you can hook up to the sterio and play MP3s, and what ever other sound formats you find. on your DVD you can play CDs, DVDs, and some even MP3 CDs. using your Svideo out, you can go upto 20feet with out losing any visable or hearable sound quality to your entertainment center. this makes upgrading alot easier and you can get DVD games and play on the computer with out buying another DVD ROM
