Have you guys read story yet?

ok, here is my take on it. if you disagree please tell me why.

According to this story, the mother wants to sue Sony, and get companies to put labels on video games because they are addicting, and can result in death. Well, for one. No sane, healthy person will blow his head off. Two, I dont recall her saying in the story anything about stopping her son from playing. Three anything, and everything is addictive if abused.

If I were a judge, ill tell that bitch mother to **** off. She should be the first person to blame for her sons death, not the video game.

Ill write more on hthis later, but need to finish Computer project.

Well it's a bit dumb, but if that's happening to people then it's a problem, so it wouldn't hurt to put a labels on games that could cause addiction.

Oh and about the sueing part that's bull ****, next thing you know people will buy EverQuest, say they're addicted and sue Sony.

Anyways, there's alot behind this story that we don't know, like you said we don't know if the mother did try to stop her son. So we can judge that quick.

I was at least releaved to see that the woman wanted to sue only to put a warning label on the game instead of a bajillion dollars. That appears to be more genuine in my opinion. You can't deny that games like that are extremely addictive and possible health hazards.

Well, I am unfortunately on both sides of the fence here. (and it hurts like a b****!)

On the one hand we have to be fair. This is a grieving mother of a boy who suffered a violent death at his own hands. Anyone who has lost a close family member knows that your mind races to find an answer to the question "why?". This woman most likely knows nothing about EQ and so she cannot rule out it being the cause of her sons death. We of course all know that video games in most cases are not the "cause" of anything. I will however admit that we are all a product of our environment and the things we see on a daily basis DO affect us. For instance, can you say that a person who watches video of people being shot in the head for 12hrs straight every single day for a year will not be affected in some way by it? Now I seriously doubt that this person will run out and start shooting people in the head because of it but if the right random mix of circumstances are combined with this, then there could be a problem. This is what "brainwashing" is. EQ is hardly comparable to the above, but the mother does not know that. What she is asking for is in no way unreasonable. All she wants to know is what her son did in EQ, who he talked with, what kind of influence this may have had on him. If I had a son that took his own life I would immediately look for the thing that most occupied his life to try to determine if it was a "cause".

On the other hand we have Sony. For the EXACT reasons above, giving access to a severely grieved mother to all of the information she is asking for is dangerous. In a grieved state, people can be so driven to find answers that they may find "proof" where there is none. This leads to the mother saying "The tower of YankemSockem in EQ looks just like a gun and that is what made my son shoot himself". Persons greiving do not always have a normal state of mind. This then opens up a line of lawsuits on Sony for which they may have to pay out millions of dollars all based upon the assumptions of a grieving mother. For proof of this, you only have to look to the lawsuits against Tobbacco companies. Plastered all over every box of cigarettes is a straight to the point warning that use of this product is hazardous to your health. On top of that, EVERYONE has the common knowledge that cigarettes kill and yet companies pay out Millions of dollars each year to such lawsuits.

So I took up all this space to say that there is no right or wrong party in the above situation. It is an unfortunate incident in which Sony was involved by matter of circumstance. If the kid had instead been watching John Woo movies 12 hours a day, then I GUARANTEE that John Woo would be in for the same type of lawsuit.
