It looks like there have been a few small tremors in the gaming universe lately. First, Sony has finally announced that the Playstation 3 will see a November launch in Japan. No surprise really, except maybe to the investors who only read the official hype.
And then there's Dell, who it seems has indeed purchased Alienware. Of course none of this is "official, official" yet, since heaven forbid if the target market should read the news before yet another gigantic company has had a chance to make a PR release about it dealings. There's all sorts of "No Commentary" about this, which as my seven year-old cousin will tell you (when asked if you're with someone), means it's true. |

| Very interesting news about Alienware. PS3 sounds about right with a 2007 US launch. Why would Dell want to buy Alienware? |

Well, Dell is downplaying the rumors now, and there's decent arguments for them NOT buying alienware, to be fair. But from there, the two biggest enthusiasts are thinking are a) Dell has tried to break into the Alienware/Voodoo/Falcon Northwest market for a while now buy offering High-End (and high-premium) custom built gaming rigs. Think back when they started spinning off their XPS line as the "gamers line" a year + ago, and their top of the line case became snazzier and stuff. It's pretty obvious that they haven't quite succeeded yet.
b) The other thing on people's mind is that Dell has been flirting with AMD for a long time, and at least SOMEONE in Dell realizes they're missing out on a large part of the enthusiast market by not offering A64/Athlon FX chips for gamers. By snagging Alienware as a wholey (and stealthily?) owned subsidiary, they could offer AMD based gaming rigs without having to polute their "Dell" relationship with Intel.
You know, right when it seems like the next gen Conroe and Merom Core Duo chips from Intel (due out at the end of 2006) could snatch back the performance crown. Ha! :D |
