With the recent lull in Rainbow Six news, I thought I'd do a "Where are they now?" article about three ex-Red Storm developers whose new work has shown up in recent videogaming news. Each of the following individuals had a major impact on early Red Storm games such as the original Rainbow Six, Rogue Spear, and Ghost Recon. It's great to see what they are up to now, and how they are carrying on their excellent work in their latest projects since moving on from Red Storm!
Brian Upton Brian Upton was with Red Storm from the beginning and served as the Lead Designer on Red Storm's signature titles Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon. He helped develop many of the core aspects of R6 and GR, from engineering duties, to creating storylines and character biographies, to major gameplay decisions. You can read more about his role in Rainbow Six in his classic Rainbow Six Postmortem at Gamasutra (free registration required).
Brian's first project since leaving Red Storm was finally revealed at E3 2005. It's a remake of a classic PS1 game called Warhawk and it is slated to come out for the PlayStation 3. You can read about his new game and more at Brian's blog here. (Thanks to Dick Splash for finding it :-)
John Sonedecker Long-time R6/GR community members are familiar with John Sonedecker as he played a major part in supporting mod makers for both Rogue Spear and GR. John served as an artist on the first two Rainbow games, and was Lead Artist/Level Designer for GR1 and SOAF.
After leaving Red Storm, John served as Creative Director for BattleBorne. His work on Combat Elite: WWII Paratroopers has finally seen the light of day when it was released earlier this month after a long delay due to a legal dispute between BattleBorne and game publisher Acclaim.
John has now struck out on his own and formed a new company: Blackfoot Studios. Through his new studio, he has already done some work with his old friends at RSE by creating multiplayer maps for GR2: Summit Strike.
GR.net recently had a chance to do a fantastic Q&A with John Sonedecker about his new studio. Keep an eye out for great things to come from Blackfoot!
Steve Cotton Steve Cotton was an Artist on the original R6, Lead Artist for Eagle Watch and Rogue Spear, and Producer for Urban Ops. His classic R6 levels include EW's Space Shuttle and Covert Ops' Jungle map.
Steve Cotton's classic Jungle map from COE After Steve left Red Storm, he headed over to Microsoft Game Studios and worked on Amped and Amped 2. However, his most visible work to date has been on Halo 2 (which just celebrated the first anniversary of its release). Steve appears in a video documentary included with the Halo 2 Multiplayer Map Pack where he talks about how he designed two of the new Halo 2 multiplayer levels: Containment and Sanctuary. You can see a video preview of Sanctuary (arguably the single best Halo 2 MP map) here. |
