Lately, there has been a little commotion at various GR forums around the community with rumors flying about Ubisoft releasing the Xbox version of Ghost Recon 2 before the PC version. First, let me say that these are just rumors and so far Ubisoft has confirmed nothing officially about GR2.
Apparently, the source of these rumors came from the Dec 2003 issue of the Official Xbox Magazine. Thanks to SOTOMac for pointing out at GR.net's forums that the article says nothing about GR2 coming out for the Xbox first, only that it may include playable vehicles like Halo.
Furthermore, the only concrete clue that there is even any plan for a GR2 is the Ubisoft 2001-2002 annual report. Any dates given by online retailers and predictions by trade magazines should not be considered fact until Ubi makes an official announcement.
Editorial: GR first on the Xbox would be nothing new ... What's ironic about this fuss is that if you look at the development history of the original GR (which we kept close track of here at GR Retreat from various news sources), you would know that GR1 was designed for consoles right from the start! According to this IGN article, Red Storm was the first third-party developer to receive one of the Xbox SDKs (Software Development Kits) in the summer of 2000. This indicated that RSE's next major title after Rogue Spear would appear on the Xbox console.
Even GR's design indicates it was always meant to be a console game: GR's pared-down minimal planning stage (as opposed to Rainbow Six's complicated one) was obviously done with console gamers in mind to let them jump right into the action. The reason that the GR1 Xbox release came much later than the PC version was mainly due to the delay in the launching of Xbox Live. Because of GR's strong multiplayer experience, Microsoft was counting on GR to be a Xbox Live launch title as early as the first half of 2002.
So all those people complaining that Ubi would not be respecting PC gamers by releasing GR2 for the Xbox first (again, a rumor which is not even confirmed) don't realize that Ubi might have done the same with the original GR too if they could have. In the majority of cases, console versions make more money than PC versions, so it would be no surprise if Ubi wanted to push out the console version of GR2 first.
