With large monitors getting more popular and less expensive, some of you may have enough screen real estate to play GR in a window while multitasking. This may come in handy if you are taking screenshots of the game, or making a machinima movie. (Check out a great discussion about making GR movies in GR.net's forums. GR.net also has several fan-made GR movies available for download here.)

Click on the image to see a larger version.

So how do you run GR in a Window? Here are the steps: (Note that you do this at your own risk ... GR-R is not responsible if you subsequently have problems with your GR installation.)
  • Find the "options.xml" file in the Ghost Recon folder
  • Rename the file "options.txt"
  • Open the options.txt file in Notepad
  • Find the "Fullscreen" tags and change "TRUE" to "FALSE"
  • Rename the file back to "options.xml" and run the game

You can set the size of the window in the game's Option Menu. To be able to use your cursor outside the game window, just ALT-TAB to whatever other apps you are running concurrently.

if you have a text editor like UltraEdit then you wont have to rename the file to a .txt file. Just open it up it and it should give you syntax highlighting.

Even open the xml file in an html editor.

Even easier - right click on the xml file and select "open with" then select Notepad from the list. Edit the file, choose "save", and you are done :o)

    Great tips guys, thanks!

I did the xml->txt renaming method to cover those people still running GR on Win9x systems ... I checked on my Win 98 SE system and the right-click menu doesn't appear to have "Open With" :-(

On Win9x sytems hold down the shift key while you right click to get the open-with menu.
I thought most people were aware that you could run GR in a window. You might find this thread interesting. I remember this being discussed way back when GR was quite new. Anyway, guess it doesn't hurt to revisit it, as there are still people just discovering this precious game of ours

Thanks Jack! You've got a great memory! :-)

I suspect many hardcore GR fans know this about running GR in a window, but I don't think the majority of "casual" GR gamers know it can be done. It's too bad they didn't include it in the in-game options GUI. (I suspect Red Storm left it out because task switching in Win9x systems would have caused too many crashes which would plague tech support ;-)

That being said, even though the trick still can be done in Win9x, it's likely not stable enough to ALT-TAB too much. However, in Win2K/XP, ALT-TAB has been rock solid for me.

Besides the window trick, there's quite a lot of other goodies in that options.xml file to play around with too :-)

The other main reason I posted this topic is that although large LCD/TFT screens (17"+) are coming down in price, some fans' computers (especially with integrated graphics) don't have the 3D juice to have GR looking decent running at a large LCD's native (e.g. 1280x1024) resolution. If they try to run GR at 800x600 full-screen, the graphics may be somewhat distorted. However, if they run GR in a 800x600 window, the graphics will look much sharper.
