Those of you paying close attention to the Xbox Rainbow Six 3 banners displayed at E3 may have noticed that the name "Raven Shield" has conspicuously been absent. This made us suspect that the Xbox version may be significantly different than the PC version. The Rainbow franchise has always beem difficult to translate into console versions for several reasons including: 1) Console gamers tend to prefer a faster pace; 2) Doing the planning stage with a gamepad is a little tedious; 3) Not enough buttons on a gamepad for all the commands.
GameSpot has confirmed that the Xbox version of R6:3 will indeed be different in some respects from the original. Here's the juice:Ubi Soft has released some new details on the console versions of Rainbow Six 3. While Rainbow Six 3 was first released earlier this year for the PC, the publisher wants to make it clear that the console versions will not be direct ports. Instead, we can expect an expanded storyline, enhanced graphics that use the Splinter Cell engine, and upgraded AI features. The game is also shedding the "Raven Shield" subtitle in the transition to consoles.
Rainbow Six 3 is due out late this year for the Xbox and is scheduled for release on other, as-yet-unspecified consoles in 2004.

Wow...using the Splinter Cell engine? If they add in the dynamic lighting that would be AWESOME. After playing Splinter Cell on the Xbox I was dissappointed the first time I tried to shoot a light out in Raven Shield :)

Raven-Shield uses the engine from UT2K3. Doesn't Splinter Cell use the same UT2K3 engine just modified? At least the Splinter Cell PC demo uses the Unreal engine.

Yes, both RvS and SC use the "next-gen" Unreal engine that is the basis for Unreal Tournament 2003 and Unreal 2. However, Ubi Montreal heavily customized the engine for each game ... RvS got the planning section, and SC got lots of shadows :-) I suspect that when they say "enhanced graphics that use the Splinter Cell engine", they will be implementing some of the lighting features from SC into RvS.
