Thanks to Bubba "MasterFung" Wolford over at SimHQ for informing us about his review of the latest and greatest from Intel: the P4 3.00 GHz with 800 MHz FSB and Hyper-Threading coupled with the new i875P "Canterwood" motherboard. As usual, his suite of benchmarks focuses on games of interest to military sim fans, and includes GR cruising along at 193 fps!

Dang! That is awesome. It looks like all the current Athlon owners will be jumping to Intel chips when they next upgrade :) What resolution is it running at 193fps? I haven't read the article yet :)

Here's the P4 system resolutions and results:
1024 x 768 x 32-bit color = 193 fps
1600 x 1200 x 32-bit = 106 fps

What I like about the review is they compare the new 800 MHz FSB P4 to a AMD Athlon XP 3000+ (Barton core at 333MHz Front-Side Bus), and at the above resolutions, AMD's best CPU runs at 165 and 100 fps respectively.

To be honest those benchmark numbers are impressive but I dont think I will be jumping ship over to Intel anytime soon, considering I have my Barton chip pushing 214 FPS in GR.

AMD 2500+
768Megs Corsair XMS3200 DDR
Gainward G4 TI4800 Golden Sample
Gigabyte GA-7VAXP
1024x768x32bit

Havent run the 3dmark tests as I am still tweaking the system since I just put it together and I am getting rid of the VIA chipset because it is terrible. But I will be sure to post those results once the mobo is swapped out and the tweaking is complete just to show that AMD's can hold their own. ;)

For AMD, an nForce2 chipset is the only way to go :-)

Unfortunately I found that out the hard way ;) I never had any problems with VIA's in the past, but this chipset is giving me nothing but nightmares. Oh well my nforce2 replacement should be here by Friday :)

Hrmm, so I can just pop out the via chip on my motherboard and put in an nforce2? I have an Epox 8kha+ mobo. How much is the Nforce2 chip running?

Hey Snick, you'll have to swap out the whole motherboard. If you are not having probs with your VIA chipset, then it's likely not worth it.

The advantage of the nForce board is that it has dual channel arcitecture for DDR, and supports up to DDR400 for the upcoming Athlon XP chips with 400 MHz FSB. It is the only one that comes with nVidia's Dolby Digital sound chip (same one that is in the Xbox)

However, if you're going to swap out your whole mobo, you might as well upgrade to a faster CPU too.

IMHO, if you want to go that far, I'd suggest you might as well get an Intel CPU and mobo ;-) Entry level Intel CPUs are 2.4 GHz these days, which will soon have 800MHz FSB.

I wish it was that easy. I may have written that incorrectly, what I meant was my new nforce2 based mobo was coming on friday. :)

LOL, that is what I was thinking. When I read what you wrote though you made me do a double take :) I'm not a big hardware guy, I'm a programmer guy.
