Whether you like it or not, you can't ignore the monolithic powerhouse tag-team that is Microsoft and Intel. So what will computing be like with them a mere 2 years from now? Can you imagine working on a 10GHz computer running a 3D Windows desktop?
The Inquirer has a couple interesting stories about this. First, here's a report that Microsoft's follow-up OS to Windows XP, code-named "Longhorn", will be out by the end of 2004. Here are some features:3D desktop interface, perhaps including transparent windowsNew file system different than NTFS that supports terabyte hard-drives.NET FrameworkPalladium initiative, which requires cooperation with hardware vendors to improve system security
On the Intel CPU roadmap front, check out this article:In late 2003: Prescott core (0.09 micron) with 1MB L2 cache, 800MHz FSB, will scale from 3.2GHz to 5.2GHzIn late 2004: Tejas core (0.09 micron) with 1066MHz FSB, scaling from 5.6GHz to 9.2GHzIn 2005: Nehalem core (0.065 micron) with 1200MHz FSB, starting at 9.6GHz
Sheesh, it wasn't long ago when a jump of 33MHz in CPU clock speed was a big deal ... |
