Quite a few websites have published their review of NVIDIA's latest and greatest graphics chip, the GeForce FX 5800 Ultra. The best summary of the benchmarks can be found at X-Bit Labs here. The big news is that although it does take back the speed crown from the ATI Radeon 9700 Pro in the majority of benchmarks, it does so by a relatively small margin, which means NVIDIA has lost its considerable lead that it used to hold.
Furthermore, the biggest drawback to NVIDIA's flagship chip is that it requires a huge cooling fan that many have dubbed the "Dustbuster". Tom's Hardware Guide actually made a few MP3s of how loud the fan sounds here. Ouch.
Personally, I'm glad to see that ATI is able to now compete with NVIDIA ... in the end, it will be the end-users that benefit, and 2003 will shape up to be an interesting year in the graphics chip war. |
