According to this report, Intel has completed the design for its newest Prescott CPU which is due in mid-2003. Here are some of the reported specs: Manufactured on .09 micron process800M Hz FSBImproved Hyper-Threading technologyRumored to have up to 1 MB L2 cachePerhaps a bigger L1 data cache (32 KB? Current P4s are 8 KB)Likely to debut at 3.2 GHz and reach beyond 4 GhzSSE3 instructions
With all these changes, could we see a name change to Pentium 5? |

If I'm not mistaken, the "Pentium Pro" chip was the first time the 686 architecture was used, which was later applied to the Pentium II and III. The current Pentium 4's and AMD K7'S are 786 architecture already. So really, the next chip should be called the "Octium" (AMD already has code-named their 886 cpu the "Hammer") http://www.teccollege.com/yaple/microhardware/intelcpu.htm |
