If you're now interested in Raven Shield, then you may be interested in the status of the Unreal 2 engine and game. Looks like Epic has just announced that although Unreal 2 development is going smoothly, its release will be delayed until Christmas 2002. I wonder how this may affect the progress of R6:3?
In any case, here's a quote from Mark Rein taken from the Voodoo Extreme forums:
Unreal 2 is going to take a little longer than previously expected but it is even better than we originally thought it would be and the extra time is 100% justified. Unreal Tournament 2, on the other hand, is ahead of where we thought it would be and, as with Unreal 2, better than our expectations.
[...] As for the change in release dates: that's what happens when you value quality over all else and luckily we work with great partners like Infogrames, DE and Legend who see 100% eye-to-eye with us on that.
[...] The scope of Unreal2 is just astounding so it should come as no surprise that the amount of time it requires to polish and finesse is longer than something like UT2. The original Unreal took 3.5 years to develop whereas UT took about 14 months. In other news, the Unreal mod, Tactical Ops, is following in the footsteps of Counter-Strike and will be released as a retail product. Check out this interview with the Tac Ops team done by HomeLAN. Will Tactical Ops be major competition for Raven Shield? |

Keep in mind, there is no such thing as the "Unreal 2" engine. This is a misconception I hope we can get cleared up. The next generation engine is simply called the "Unreal engine" and it is being used to power a handful of games coming out this year. Unreal Tournament 2, Unreal 2, and Unreal Warfare. Each of those games aren't their own engine but are using the latest Unreal engine. From a marketing standpoint, that is just odd. You wouldn't want to say Raven Shield was coming out on the Unreal engine because then people might think it was using the old engine that powered Unreal 1. On the other hand, it isn't safe to say it is using the Unreal 2 engine because there is no such thing. Any delays in Unreal 2 shouldn't affect Raven Shield because their delays are not from technical engine problems but from the game content itself. Ubi Soft is already going to have the latest builds of the Unreal engine and is doing their own thing. Epic Games is creating the next generation Unreal engine and that is who Ubi Soft will work with. Legend Entertainment is creating Unreal 2 and they themselves talk to Epic for the engine content. I hope that clears some stuff up. --- Aaron "Snicker" Benzick Editor-in-Chief 3d Retreat, www.3dretreat.com |

The first engine was called the unreal engine regardless of what game was on it which in this case was Unrea, Unreal Tournament was on the Unreal Engine. So i think its safe to say The unreal 2 engine if you not refering to the game.

Well, considering the company creating Unreal 2 is not creating the engine it is using...I don't agree ;-)Epic Games creates the next generation engine (they created Unreal 1 AND the engine before) and they are now not doing any content. Legend is creating the game Unreal 2 based on the engine from Epic and Digital Extremes is creating Unreal Tournament 2 using the same engine. It would be silly to call it the Unreal Tournament 2 Engine or the Unreal 2 Engine or the Unreal Warfare Engine because they are all the exact same thing. I think it is safe calling it the "next generation Unreal engine" :-) --- Aaron "Snicker" Benzick Editor-in-Chief 3d Retreat, www.3dretreat.com |
