The embargo has been lifted and we can now publish a press release and matching screenshot for Raven Shield! I will post the full press release below but a couple of quick things to point out are the fact that it is NOT being developed by RSE and instead by a Ubi Soft team in Montreal and it is confirmed to be on the Unreal engine.

San Francisco – March 4, 2002 – Ubi Soft® Entertainment, one of the world’s largest videogame publishers, today announced plans to develop and publish the next installment of the best-selling Rainbow Six series of games with Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six®: Raven Shield. Ubi Soft will release Rainbow Six®: Raven Shield on both the PC and the Xbox video game system in the fall of 2002.
Rainbow Six®: Raven Shield is the sequel to the immensely popular Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six®: Rogue Spear, 2000 Action Game Of The Year, and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six®, 1999 Action Game Of The Year. It will be the third game in the Rainbow Six line, which has sold more than 6.7 million copies worldwide.
The Rainbow Six franchise is known for its action-packed game play and heart-stopping realism, and Rainbow Six®: Raven Shield will continue the tradition. Developed by Ubi Soft’s Montreal studio, in close collaboration with Red Storm Entertainment, Rainbow Six®: Raven Shield features a brand new Tom Clancy storyline in which Team RAINBOW is led all over the world in a string of dramatic operations. The game will utilize graphics technology provided by the next-generation Unreal™ engine to power 15 new single-player missions that include the discovery of a cache of biological weapons and stopping an armed gang from terrorizing a London bank.
“Fans have been pleading with us for a long time to come out with another chapter in this blockbuster series of games, and Rainbow Six®: Raven Shield will be worth the wait,” said Laurent Detoc, president of Ubi Soft Entertainment Inc. “The secrecy behind this project has been crucial to the evolution of the game. We’ll be ready to unveil all the action at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles this May.”

Ubisoft Montreal better not butcher R6:3, I guess they'll hire some Unreal map makers, and RSE will coordinate the game play style, should be sweet.

I am still optimistic but scared at the same time :-)
I wish they would have sent a little cleaner screenshot. The player models look great but all those jaggies on the buildings are goofy. With all the nice cards offering FSAA it isn't a big deal to get rid of them :-)

I should touch up on my french just in case the developers don't know how to answer my questions in english. hehe Montreal hmm that's a 2-3 hour car ride from my house, maybe I should move if I'm lucky I could be a tester.
Anyways maybe you guys can answer my question, Will I be able to use 3D Studio Max for modding? I heard there's an unreal editor that the developers use but I don't know if includes a 3D editor and if so will I be able to import my 3Dmax models.

Unreal engine uses UnrealED which is the only tool you will need to create new levels. 3dsmax is not required at all.

Okay people, look at those charactes in the press release, then look at the nice looking Ghost Recon screenshot: http://www.3dretreat.com/snicker/images/gr_1600-1200_4x.jpg
The press release shot makes those characters look likely a nicely done comic book cover art. The character in the GR shot to me just looks more photorealistic for some reason.
That's my problem with the Unreal engine and its derivatives

They look like that because 1) that colour is goofy, 2) they are wearing armor. They look like better RS models. Unreal 2 is twice as good graphically as GR.

| I have to admit I am a little skeptical on this whole Unreal Engine thing with R63. I guess I will wait to find out more details before I form any more opinions on this whole thing. I do hope it is for the better though. We shall see. |

I think it is a big mistake to not have RSE do it alone. Unless they didn't want to because ubi was forcing them to do something they didn't want to do, in which case ubi is stupid for that. RSE has made these amazing games every time. Even from a business point of view, if RSE makes the best games (and was the only company to make these games) why not just have them do it so it will be better, and more people would buy it. It seems to me that ubi is just trying to use the R6 name now.
